I prefer jrock to jpop. However, some Japanese artists should just not sing at all. I've heard and seen many of the weirdest things that can only come from the Japanese.

I don't really listen to a lot of Japanese music but I do listen to:
Utada Hikaru
L'arc~En~Ciel
In response to blue_rebel, you're right, Utada Hikaru has a few good songs, but the thing is, I'm such a Kingdom Hearts fanboy, that being a Utada Hikaru fan comes along with it. ^^
Her voice has a funny kind of vibrato. It's not the "nice" vibrato, it's just... I don't know, weird? It's like her voice is shaking. +__+ Ayumi, on the other hand, has an awesome vibrato, except that it gets a bit annoying when she sings live.. it's so hard to hear the actual note.
Hmm...
Utada Hikaru
Ayumi Hamasaki
Gackt
Dir En Grey (Ain't Afraid To Die is amazing)
MUCC...
They're the one's I love the most...
I'm completely uneducated when it comes to japanese music. Could someone list some bands or japanese musicians that someone new to japanese music should try at first.
