Out of curiosity, what kind of club was he trying to enter? Knowing that might help answer your question.
A friend of mine that was in Japan. Told me that they refused to let him enter a club, case he was a foreigner.
Is this common or was this just a racist club?

GALERIE : Limited Internet access for certain reasons...
^_^ racism is common in every club, in every country~! it's just wierd when it happens to foreigners (especially white people...) cuz they're use to doors swinging open for them when they go to other countries...
i suppose it was the wrong kind of club, wrong time of day~! besides, you never know who owns those kind of clubs, no matter where you go~!
considering red light districts like Roppongi swarm with tourists and expatriates on a daily basis, I find your friends dilemma less than believable. Then again there are probably a multitude of private clubs that would want to and have the right to exclude patrons based on whatever reason they feel. Race could very well be a factor. He could have also been a belligerent douchebag.
How is it different from getting into clubs here in the states?
and if it was a "gentlemen's club" was he hoping to score with one of the other sweaty horny guys?
"an Expatriate is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person's upbringing or legal residence. The word comes from the Latin ex (out of) and patria (country)"
your definition of Expatriate is too narrow and some of them may buy expensive drinks, yes.
There is a popular urban myth in Japan that AIDS can only be caught from a foreigner. There is also a rather crappy reputation of foreigners that is half generic xenophobia working on the Japanese mainstream imagination and half inspired by genuine dickheads who come to Japan expecting only to lay "submissive Japanese women", get drunk in public, start fights, swear, and be generally obnoxious.
It is common for foreginers to be refused entry into sex-centric establishments in any number... and from any restaurant or bar in large groups.
Yes, the Japanese people are racist.
But no moreso than many of the idiotic foreign sex-tourists trying to get into "gentlemen's clubs" to feed their exotic submissive Asian-fetishes.
The worst cases of "racism" are deep-seated, subtle, long-term xenophobia against foreign residents, Japanese nationals with mixed blood and others who actually function in the society and yet, will never be completely accepted into it.
Getting into a sex club is the least of your friend's concerns. But if he actually learns Japanese fluently, he might stand a better chance of getting in (or in the very least, finding out exactly why he's being turned away). Who knows, he may actually be able to get himself a real girlfriend and forego prostitution altogether (which, by the way, is illegal).
I'm guessing that club wasn't selling full-on sex... if your friend didn't understand that: he was right to be turned away.
Though he should probably thank them. The bill in the lowest-end hostess joint runs over $100 an hour... (that's for a few drinks and polite conversation). The places offering "massages", "dances", etc. can put you well in the hole for hundreds.
