A little advice from me, watch samurai Champloo, A lot of info there...hehe
I was sitting in an Asian Civ class, and the current topic was Japan History. The professor showed a few pictures of Japanese women, around the Edo Period, who had these things in their hair. He says because they have these things in their hair, they are most likely prostetutes, because regular Japanese women would not have things in their hair. Anyone know what these things are? What they mean? Thanks. PM me with an asnwer too if you can. I'll check back on this thread.

yo it's called those women who have that in their hair were geisha or women that gavve pleasure you should check out memoirs of a geisha if you want to learn what that is
yeah, they were most likely geisha. they were not prostitutes, although many have mistaken them to be. their job is to please men, and do this through dancing, singing, calligraphy, flower assortment, serving tea, etc. and not through "prostitute ways".Originally Posted by DFXT

Geisha aren't really prostitutes, there masters of entertainment and conversation. The fashionestas of there time. And engaging in sexual acts is part of obliging mens entertainment. But i don't believe it happend as much as people potray it to. About the hair pieces, it may be because they have money to have luxuries and they need to stand out to keep people captivated.

I agree with nym i dont think it happened as much as it was portraied ... But non the less im sure it did happen.

Geisha's are cool, i think they still exist. My friend in Japan keeps telling me to come check them out, still trying to find the funds to travel. After I buy a bike, though.
