    Okaasan Vs. Haha

There's something I don't get when I watch anime... how come the characters use "okaasan" (someone else's mother) instead of "haha" (your own mother)?

Well 'okaasan' is the term for 'mom' in general, and 'haha' is like a humble reference term. 'okaasan' is probably the most common way of calling your own mom like you call your mom 'mom'.

You don't directly call your mom 'haha' but only use 'haha' when you refer to your mom in a conversation with someone you're not that close to or older like your teacher or sempai (times when you should be humble). So with friends you use 'okaasan' when you talk about your mom.

Hope this answers your question a bit.

Haha. I think that's classical Japanese. Let's hope I'm right.

Wow, I would've thought that it was the other way around....... Okaasan seems so long and formal.

But anyway, I think the two words could be compared to "mother" and "mom" in the English language. You dont use mother as often because it's formal..... it's more often used when talking with someone unfamiliar or older, kind of like a sophisticated way of saying mom

okaasan and haha are both mom/mother in translation. (I don't know why it isn't used this way in animes but this is how it is in Japan according to my mom would just reterned from Japan) When refering to or talking to your own mother you would use haha but when talking about someone else's mother you would use okaasan. same is with otousan and chichi(never say chichi in front of mexicans)

Oh? I thought it was like ChamaTama said, when talking to or about someone else's mother, you use "okaasan", but when referring to your own mother to someone else, you use 'haha'. And then when actually speaking to your mum you use '(o)kaasan'? That's how I was taught it ^^0
