![]() Credits: 11,146 | Re: Real Otakus That is actually pretty tough. I mean it would help if the person could really understand the morales behind anime/manga, going past the general storyline. Cosplaying really shows your colors as a real otaku. From what I have read about it a lot of research of the characters looks is involved, on top of making the complex costumes. Ah another thing, not ashamed to admit his love for anime/manga amongst a crowd of haters. (I am about the only person at school who like anime it seems -_-) |

Diamond in the Rough | Re: Real Otakus Otaku to me basically means obsessive to the point of being way too obsessed. Other than anime otaku, there can be computer otaku, game otaku, etc... A "Real Otaku" should be able to watch, read, compulsivate over his/her area of interest for days on end. They should only be able to get up to eat or go to the bathroom. In fact, even then, they should have a good food stash next to them and have a bottle or two to pee inside of so they don't have to go to the bathroom as often. While watching anime, they should be able to repeat every line before its said, and then be able to repeat it without even watching it. (line by line). The otaku should be living at his/her parents house even if they're 30 or 40 years old, have bad hygiene, and lounge around in t-shirts and shorts with stains on them. They have no friends except the people they talk to online and the anime/manga characters they watch. (they can be your best friends....) This is my horribly stereotypical image of an otaku. Biased? Yes. Can you find these people? No, not really. Usually peoples "images" are off, and if I offend anyone in any manner I apologize, I don't mean to make fun of you, its just what comes to mind when I think of "extreme otaku". I personally find these people super awesome. |

I would also like to add the enormous collection of anime DVD's and other merchandise. The whole room filled with figurines of all the anime characters. Plus the consumption of imported Japanese snacks. Along with the ability to use chopsticks to eat everything imaginable. (Although that might not be so hard. Personally I use them with noodles, all I can do so far -_-) | |

![]() ![]() Credits: 630 | Re: Real Otakus I believe though definitions are way too false... a real otaku is just someone who gets really into it... your definitions listed so far involve money... which is by far the WORST way to gauge a level of obsession... fixating on it and thinking about it for days on end is a good way to say you are beyond obsession... if you talk about it so much you get others to obsess on it... that's even better... going over to a friends house to watch their anime AND THEN complaining about it being worse than another anime just so that they purchase (or rent) the anime you say is better than the one you watched... that's true obsession in my eyes... but again... it involves money... I am by far one of the poorest otakus there is... but I know much more on some animes than other people... knowledge on an anime can translate to obsession as well... knowing the history behind elements used is even better still... my list could go on... but I don't want to type a thirty page rant about things that could be considered parts of obsession...

![]() ![]() Credits: 85,069 | Re: Real Otakus Asking what defines a "real" otaku is like asking, "how many of you have real counterfiet money?" Or, "What's a real computer dork?" There are many otaku with many preferences. Some are anime otaku, some are video game otaku, some are cosplay otaku. Otaku is simply a love of what you like best. The word 'otaku' is like the English equivalent to geek/dork/nerd. There are even military otaku out there who obsess over guns and camoflauge.

![]() Credits: 22,734 | Re: Real Otakus The original meaning of "otaku" has actually a negative connotation, comparable to the stereotypes of Trekkies, Everquest/World of Warcraft/Dungeons and Dragons addicts, and obsessive fangirls (or fanboys) with Jamie Lynn Spears or Johnny Depp all over their bedrooms and clothes. It's pretty much the Japanese word for geek. And people can be "geeky" over lots of things, as you probably know. To me, an otaku isn't an otaku until the mere sight of anything related to their fandom brings them rapture.
