every sword requires you to be skilled n to practice to master it.
Personally start off with the wooden verisons of the swords n practice!
Then increase the weight n get use to the weight of the sword.
Each sword has it pros n cons

ya, and the wooden sword for practice idea is definately a good one. swinging a real sword around as a novice would not be safe to those around you.

Swords were still being made at the time of the American Civil War. I was surprised to learn about that. Even though very few of the swords are still around they were made at one point.
