![]() | Re: What are the top religions in Japan? Well Kyoto is really a gargantuan city to chose so you might have a hard time finding out. But, according to my family traditions (I am of Japanece decent) Shinto and Buddhism have really become fused into one. Because often Japanese people tend to chose both Shinto and Buddhism as their religion. So in turn when I visited Japan, I've come to notice that they are really about become the same in the shrine. So it might be better if you chose which shrines dedicate their precincts to a certain Shinto god and comb those out rather than chose the broader term you had. Because as this is quoted from wiki "Modern Shinto is the result of a centuries-old syncretism with Buddhism, the legacy of which continues on despite a forced separation by the Meiji government." That would be a monumental task to find which are purely Shinto and which are purely Buddhist. You might want to take a look at this article Shinto Religion By the way in Japan I am pretty sure Shinto is the eldest religion in Japan after all it was created there...not to mention Buddhism was later introduced my immigrants. |

![]() | Re: What are the top religions in Japan? Kyoto has plenty temples (Buddhist) and shrines (shinto). Remember that these religions are not mutually exclusive religions like christianity. Many people are both. In fact the largest daibotsu (great buddha) is in Nara which is next to Kyoto. |
