You basically answered yourself. And my addition is that the Japanese scientists are always able to extend the powers of technologies founded elsewhere. They are not just copying. They add new properties. Such as blue LEDs, organic gold solvent, various DNA research and so on. They have also significantly overhauled the old cartoons to build a whole new kind of commercial art. (That must be an oxymoron!)
