The oil sale surcharges, kickbacks and smuggling schemes provided Saddam with access to hard currency. Iraq was allowed to write its own contracts and choose the contractors.
The largest single kickback came from the Malaysian firm Mastek, the report said.
Just wondering, what kind of preferential treatment was given to these companies??
Is it like they get more oil for a cheaper price and such?? And also how do these kickbacks work??
Regardless, on the surface it would seem very obvious that these countries would want to protect their interests and pocket.

Good question. It doesn't say, unless it was being given oil contracts. Cheap oil is a big deal (as we all seem well aware of these days).

Well as i know Iraq was the leading producer of oil of the OPEC organization and maybe that's Iraq had those contratcs
The deal was that these individuals/companies is that they would receive oil 'kickbacks' for favors to Sadam. Meaning they would be given certificates for barrels of oil that they then could sell on the open market for cash if they did favors for Sadam. Those favors usually were stuff Sadam wanted them to do that he could not legally do because of UN Sanctions.
Basicly it comes down to Sadam paying people to do illegal things with Iraqi oil vouchers.
Huhm. While a bit unexpected, I'm really not surprised by this. It would help to explain their brash attacks against our declaring war on Iraq.
