All you really have to do is find an imaging program that can crop images.
Just choose an image you like, crop it down to size (which is 80x80 pixels for this site) then save it as a seprate file. That is the absolute basic way of making avatars.

Making avatars are simple, unless you want to make really fancy ones like some of the ones you see on Livejournal and places like that... then you'll need a program like Photoshop.

Take my avatar for example, I've got around 100 of these type of avatars, that are nothing more than a cropped manga images with a thin boarder around it...

use photoshop 7.0..? :]
