I just saw Azumi, picked it up at the local video rental store. Mtv Asiamania so the American people have probably watched this thing loooong ago...
Oh well.
I expected nothing much, and at first, that's exactly what I got. The originality is feh for the most part, the effects so-so at best and the fights
are not bad but not great either, mostly because the cast has clearly no experience with a sword.
Somehow though this film became a guilty pleasure for me to watch:
First of all the crimson goodness is plentiful.
Second, there is one particular insane bad guy who just suits Hassun so well...(except for the girly stuff)
Third, Azumi is played by Aya Ueto, who doesn't look bad at all...
Fourth, it's pretty amusing to watch
Fifth, it's not entirely predictable (although most of it is).
Sixth, It's based on a manga (which can be good or VERY bad) by Yu Koyama.
Yeah, well some other interesting things:
I read the Japanese runtime is 142 min, the Euro one is 128 min...
I don't like that...
The action is choreographed by Yuta Morokaji, he did Zelda: Ocarina of time
There is also a second Azumi film called 'Azumi 2 Death or love'
The most fun fact however is that Hideo Kojima, the godlike developer of the MG(S) series has a small (very small) cameo in it.
Riuhei Kitamura directed it, he also made Versus, which I have yet to see
So I guess this is one of those laid back chambara films... Those can't hurt from time to time.
Anyone else seen it? Thoughts? Info? Especially if you know something about the length difference...
