I believe that the drive for competition, which war results from, is a good thing. It is sad to say but almost all of our advances throughout history are the result of asttempts to make weapons more powerul. The interenet, nuclear power, cell phonrs, and other things are the results of war projects.

It's a wonderful thought and i'd be a liar if i said that i didn't fantasize about the possibility of that happening, but to be realistic....i know that they aren't going anywhere. Cooperation has never really been man's strongest quality by far. Nuclear and Biological weapons fall under the list of things we wish we could un-make and forget about but i know that it's just wishful thinking at this point.....

Could a HEL (high energy laser) replace smart missiles and bombs currently fielded, perhaps. Would it be considered a weapon of mass destruction...no

By definition a weapon of mass destruction is any weapon or device that is intended, or has the capability, to cause death or serious bodily injury to a significant number of people through the release, dissemination, or impact of toxic or poisonous chemicals or their precursors, a disease organism, or radiation or radioactivity.

Now a HEL's under development are meant to strike a target with surgical precision. Take for example a tank amidst a populated area. Traditionally, aircraft would employ smart bombs to destroy that target, but these devices had a destructive radius of about 60 sq ft. Even the latest Small Diameter Bombs have a radius of 23 sq. ft. Any civillians with in that radius is screwed. Now the HEL's under development are meant to strike a target with surgical precision. Meaning that tank can be destroyed* while limiting the damage to just the tank.

Note* By destroyed, I mean render inoperable, the laser could be used to simply knock out the tanks engine. Thus, executing the objective without blowing up the tank.

Yes, we have been going for quick and effective removal of enemy units with little or no damage to civilians. Blowing up unarmed people is bad P R.

Sure weapons help us advance, but think about it surely there is another way and use for such technology that doesnt involve killing millions of innocent people.

Like I said, that will come afterwards. Once the technology is developed and then obsolete, civilian usage will begin

^very true. Just imagine when they release hover technology to civilians. scooters and skateboards are used in the military, or at least in prototype stages, just imagine, it may render rubber tires obsolete.

A painful transition at first, but competition has spurred us on to become part of what we are. People should not try to surpress that natural fighting instinct. It is a good thing, at least in my opinion,

It's not so much the fighting, but the reason for fighting. The people want to know what they're fighting for, not just, we're fighting, that's what a normal anti-war person would be asking.

People fight so better than selves. Sometimes others benefit, sometimes not. That is always why we attack other nations. Very few people, only some psychos, like to kill for no reason.
