I would say Giant Robo, but it isn't really a mecha anime. It does have some nice robot battles though.
Favorite: Gunbuster
Why? Good story, nice pacing, fun but also dramatic and somewhat melancholy. All that plus my favorite Super Robot ever - the Gunbuster - oh, and lots of explosions.
Second favorite: G Gundam
(With G Robo and G Gundam, I guess you can tell Imagawa is my favorite anime director)
Why? The hot-blooded action mixed with the Gundam liscense.
Honorable mentions:
Turn A Gundam - This one is very close to G Gundam as my favorite Gundam anime. Great story.
Gaogaigar - Just a fun anime with intense attacks. The theme song really sets the mood for this super robot series.
I'd say Evangelion was good for giant robots, but it wasn't primarily a mech anime. The best Mecha Series was, in my opinion, Gundam.
Evangelion? The evas aren't even robots. (srry for spoiling but now u been warned if it is a spoiler..) Evas are angels inside some armor.
Best mecha has to be Escaflowne.
