Bounty Hunter Robots?

I'm an early twenties girl who loves anime such as hellsing, beserk and ninja scroll just to name a couple in my collection -- but I was wondering if you could help me.

A number of years ago I saw (my first actually) an anime on TV and it was about a young female andriod who falls in love with this andriod bounty hunter type guy. He is obsessed with getting to this city in the sky which is connected to the land by these huge pipes. He tries to get up there a few times and in the end he dies trying by being cut up by these huge blades whilst climbing the pipe. She puts his remains in a little box and ties some balloons to it to give him a 'farewell'.

Now, for the life of me, I cannot remember the name of this movie... I have been told by an anime lover a year or two ago and didnt write it down... does anyone here know?

The anime you speak of is Battle Angel/Battle Angel Alita. It is known as Gunnm in Japan. It's a two epsode long anime, and can be found on DVD online or probably even in some anime shops and dvd stores. The manga is much longer and has more story to it. However I viewed the anime a few times and I was pleased with it.

Actually, 'Battle Angel Alita' WAS available on DVD, but has been out of print since 2001. The director James Cameron bought up the movie rights to 'Battle Angel', and evidently has the DVD distribution rights as well...
