Wow, that'll be awesome. Are you modernizing it? Anyway, I think Great Expectations would be a good choice. Little women is AWESOME.

Just about anything written in the 1800's would make good Manga. They had it all. Romances, society and courtship, horror, you name it.

I don't know if it counts but numeral tales from the bible would translate well into manga.

The thing is, are they going to be drawn in manga/doujinshi artistic style? Or true Japanese Manga??? After all, true Japanese manga are aimed towards a japanese audiance, with a japanese cultural twist... It would be interesting to see King Aurther and the Knights of the Round table, or the story of Don Quixote translated in the context of the Shougun/Samurai culture... An american story such as Huckleberry Finn just wouldn't translate well to japanese culture...

Hmmm.... if you are looking for novels that would make good manga, try The Three Musketeers or The Count of Monte Cristo, both done by Alexandre Dumas. Oddly enough, I think that To Kill a Mockingbird might make a good manga.

When it comes to revenge stories, you can't get much more classic than The Count of Monte Cristo.
