Lightbulb Computer use linked to glaucoma ?

This is what I heard. Heavy users of computers, especially those who are short-sighted, may be at risk from glaucoma, a disease that can cause blindness, a study published in a specialist journal on Tuesday says.

Japanese doctors assessed the sight of more than 10,200 Japanese workers, measuring them for visual acuity and signs of glaucoma.

The volunteers were also asked to fill in questionnaires about their computer use, at home or in the office, and any history of eye disease.

A total of 165 workers, or 1.6 percent, turned out to have suspected glaucoma, characterised by tunnel vision or blind spots.

Those who were heavy computer users -- defined as working onscreen more than eight hours a day -- were twice as likely to have glaucoma than light or medium users.

In addition, of the 165 with glaucoma, 136 had myopia.

The study appears in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, published by the British Medical Association (BMA).

Glaucoma is a slow, gradual disease of the optic nerve that often goes undetected. Among the identified risk factors are smoking and high blood pressure.

The authors speculate that the optic nerve in short-sighted people may be more vulnerable to computer stress than in normal-sighted people.

If so, that would be dramatic news, given that so many hundreds of millions of people around the world now work at computer terminals, at work and at home.

They stress though that the study has limitations, notably in that most of the volunteers were male and this may have skewed the outcome. Further work is needed to probe the suspected link, they say.

I heard about this on the news too....during lunch time at work...hehe you should've heard everyone saying "well, we're screwed" =P

but yeah~ I'm sure they'll do more analysis and a more general investigation. Like they said it was a limited study with mainly males, and I suspect mainly with Japanese people.

But in any case, excessive use of the computer is a bad thing. Even if you work on a computer all day it's a good thing to get up, go get a drink or something at LEAST every two hours.

I don't know which is worse...the amount of time i spend in front of a computer at work or the time i spend on it during school. =S

I carry around a laptop to class to type notes, chat, do work in between classes, etc. then i go home and sometimes i have both the laptop and the desktop in front of me =P not to mention the amount of time we spend living in the lab doing/finishing projects. The life of a CS major (nono~ not the FPS kind) >.< seems like you can't get away from that darned machine.....but i guess nor would I be able to live without it =P

oh and that strain you were talking about? I get that too.....i find my eyesight is the worst after exams (after the amount of cramming and finishing up projects). Luckily *knock on wood* I haven't had any real, lasting trouble with my eyes (ie: no glasses).

ya, and it really dont help if your hand writing is bad - college/uni just makes you type up yet more stufff, i get that all the time (my college makes us write up stuff still cause their trying to cut down on copy pasting from google - ending up in handed in exams/etc lol). Well do thye do have otherways of stopping it, like wanintg a bibliography and or giving you disk to save your wokr on, then hand back in once you go. N another ya..., it really is hard to avoid the damned things, so gotto pick out a job with no comps involved (getting harder todo nowadays) and it kinda....... dont help when all my college qualifictaions are bout computers;;;;; ,

I figure any computer related illness will show up sometime later, like other illnesses do.. come bakc and bite ya from outta nowhere \. So maybe my bad eye sight will get worse sometime soon...
