    Re: A Dead Modem?

    If you are running a Windows-based operating system attempt to query the specific modem using {control panel -- phone and modem options -- modem -- query modem } and also look up via a search engine or modem-manufacturers website for what are called AT-commands: they are a character string that sends parameters to the modem that may be able to reinitiliase it;

    Lord Katsuhito is probably right, 4 years old? Something was bound to happen to it.

    Grumble Grumble Grumble

    Heavy data use??? Probably not... Accumulated damage caused by dust, over-heating caused by poor air circulation, static shocks, voltage spikes and brown-outs from not having a surge-protector/power conditioner... Maybe

    Another (and surprising common) cause is that the inexpensive (cheap) imported electronics used low quality (cheap) capacitors which take about 3 - 4 years of of use before their electrolytic dry out and become useless. This is still considered an issue with the production of some motherboards...

    Re: A Dead Modem?

    well im no genius so you can decide whether you want to read this or not, especially wehn I am posting after the o' wise one

    besides the four years mark, that thing about the downloading too much happens to me sometimes...but still what your father said about downloading too much music is bullcrap...It still happens once in while when I start to game, download, and stream video a lot all in the same day. Then all of sudden it would just disconnects from my computer and it would take me to turn off the modem and then turn it back on to work.

    Thanks for the help, guys. Although I'm not sure he'll quite understand where I got this information, I'm fairly certain that I have a fighting chance now. Thanks again!

    Also you can buy yourself some time by telling that he checked the work offline thing, and that it would take a few days to fix

    Re: A Dead Modem?

    All data is data. Your modem does not distinguish between .mp3's and .com's. I feel I'm an inspiration for this. In the past 12 months, I have downloaded well over 100 gigabytes of files ranging from entire anime series, to movies, to music, to pornography *gasp!* and my modem, which is 2 years of age, is doing fine. At some points I had download windows open for weeks at a time. Recently the company I deal with came by my house, and they said, "hey, your modem is almost three years old, we have a new version of it, we can install for you. The lifespan of the modem you currently have is only about 3 1/2 years so you may find yourself needing one shortly anyway." I of course accepted. Again, bandwidth and usage won't do damage to something which was produced because people wanted to use more bandwidth and download more. It goes without saying for most. I possess a wealth of knowledge about computers, my father knows how to check mail and that's just about it. I find him blaming me for things quite often. Sometimes I check into it and find out he is the one at fault. Electronic equipment has a life span. Dust and poor quality will commonly shorten this lifespan. And getting four years out of a modem isn't so bad if you ask me.
