It probably started with an american who moved into Japan and started to make cartoons but just called it anime. So that could be how it started.

i herd that when after the americans left Japan they left the americian funneis and the japanese liked the style of how it was drawn so they started to draw almost the same but more human like thats why astro boy looks so americian i think

But then again it could also have been a japanese person who wanted to make there television more interesting.
