The best series that I know of with a disappointing ending would be 'Martian Successor Nadesico' (recently re-released in a low cost 'Essential Anime' edition and worth watching...). This anime series was shown in Japan during the same period that EVA was on TV, and Nadesico drew higher TV ratings... It also has a ending that would make you want to throw the DVD case at the TV Screen. And what makes it worse, is that the Theatrical Movie Sequel, 'Prince of Darkness' is based on the two Japanese Novels that extend the story after the TV series, so when you watch the Movie for the conclusion of the TV series... What the &*^$ is going on! is the first thought that occurs...

anime was really good but the ending sucked hard :/
