That's just plain awesome. Thanks for bringing this to our attention, for those of us who didn't know. Word.
Well, the official release announcing the FUNimation Channel hit yesterday afternoon. This is something we have been researching for quite some time. You may remember a poll we had on our website asking fans for their thoughts. Your interest and input definitely helped. The FUNimation Channel is another step in our ongoing strategy to bring the best anime titles to the United States. It will give us an opportunity to bring more of our top-rated shows from Japan to broadcast in the United States and will give anime fans a destination they can count on to watch quality anime shows.
The FUNimation Channel is a 24-hour digital network that will feature distinguished anime programming from FUNimation’s anime brands. We are working with OlympuSAT, one of the leading distributors for independent programming in the United States, so it will be available to video service providers throughout the nation. The plan is for the FUNimation Channel to be part of basic and extended digital packages, so it will be a regular channel in the lineup.
The programming will be an evolving mix and will feature programming from top-rated shows in Japan that have not been aired in the United States. We will have more news and information on the FUNimation Channel website (www.funimationchannel.com), which will launch within a few weeks. Fans will be able to get more information on which shows will be in the lineup, the programming schedule and where to go to contact their local providers so they can request the FUNimation Channel.

I would be worried that the cable market may become too saturated for the US anime niche market to support. ADV Films has had enough problems trying to penetrate Comcast cable markets with it's Anime Network channel, and both Sony and Toei have been hinting that they may directly enter the distribution market to push their products. And Funimation only has a limited stock of licensed anime titles, and may have to resort to licensing series from non-competing distributors (Bandai, Geneon, Manga Entertainment) to fill out their roster for 24 hour broadcast...
I've been under the impression that FUNimation was one of the top companies as far as the number of titles they have licensed.Originally Posted by LenMiyata

The reality is that Funimation is one of the newest distributors of serious anime series. Outside of their DragonBall Z franchise, their first serious series was 'Blue Gender' which first started to come out towards the end of 2001. The more established players in the industry, ADV Films, Geneon Entertainment (the former Pioneer Animation), Bandai Entertainment and Manga Entertainment have all been around since the mid to late 1990s, and all have a wider selection of titles...Originally Posted by Agent Orange 216
So then I guess the question I have is... Why FUNimation? Are they comin' with the money that others just don't want to give up/don't have? Or is it just that the others aren't interested in doing something of this nature?

The thing is, Funimation has licensed more franchise anime series (with huge episode counts) in an attempt to find a replacement for their DragonBall Z franchise. And my guess is that these monster franchise series such as DragonBall, DragonBall Z, DragonBall GT, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cased Closed (Detective Conan), Lupin the Third, have less of an appeal on DVD sales. (As an example, how many people do you know that plan on collecting all of DragonBall Z on DVD???) ADV Films has a few monster series, such as Saint Seiya and Gatchaman, but these series aren't nearly as appealing to a US audiance then the Funimation collection. The only other companies with licensed monster series is Shoupro/Viz Media (Hamtaro, Inuyasha, Naruto, Zatch Bell) and 4Kids Entertainment (Magical Doremi, Pokemon, One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh) but these companies don't have anything else in the way of anime series to flesh out a cable channel schedual.
Cool an 24 hrs anime channel, I want itbut if there any chance availible in the UK cos we don't get much anime over here
