I remember a classmate doing a project on it...i think it was vinegar and a little bit of water mixed with a dash of salt is wat she used to get the gunk off the coins..u could try that..not sure if it is the right recipe for the thingie but i know u use vinegar..

You could go farther with the cola thing and get the syrup for it. (for fast-food resteraunts/theaters-they use syrup and put soda-water in it after it comes out of the bag.. usually done by mechanical processes)
Anyway, trucks carrying the syrup are considered "dangerous" and you need a hazmat licence to carry it... So I guess its a bit more potent than the watered-down stuff. Or you could just boil some regular soda to evaporate the liquid and get the syrup that way...
But that should disolve anything that comes in contact of your metel.
