Hey guys, I am new here and I am big fan of Miyazaki. Just wanted to find out what the consensus is on the (Mod edit) greatest. Thus far, I am leaning towards "Spirited Away," "Princess Mononoke" and "Nausicaa..."
Also, could you guys give me some more ideas on what to get into, watch, etc? I just recently bought "Akira," great, and "Perfect Blue" which I have yet to watch. I also own "ghost in the shell."

The man is amazing as is Studio Gibli. Their work is totally marked with excellence beyond compare. I'm enjoying the Disney releases, it's nice to get unhacked versions of thier movies, but I want to know what is being released in Japan!
Is there any way to get newer releases? (Mind you I can't read or understand Japanese....guess I'm probably out of luck.) Even a plot synopsis would be appreciated.
Is there any other Japanese studio's that can even compare in quality? If so, what have they released?
My favorite part of Miyazaki's films is the way even the incidental characters take on a life of their own. Down to the "radish spirit" in "Spirited Away".
thanks Hassun. i'm not going to lie, i don't truly know a lot about the dynamics of anime or japanese animation. i do love it and do enjoy to watch it. i will definitely wath perfect blue tonight. i remember the first time i actually watched a miyazaki film. it was princess mononoke, maybe four years ago, or three. my cousin let me borrow on a whim and i plopped down, put it into the surround sound theater and watched. brilliant stuff. i love the way he paints emotion. it is so powerful yet subtle. and the ones i have seen have a certain magical quality to them that is so incredible inviting and, to be perfectly honest, mesmerizing. i am pretty sure i prefer the miyazaki stories compared with the more violent likes of akira and ghost in the shell, although both great films. the violence reminds me of kill bill, in a way. this otherworldly, brilliantly colorful grotesque deterioration.
i own porco rosso, spirited away, mononoke, nausicaa of the miyazaki films. i was thinking about buying castle in the sky and the cat returns. any others?

yeah perfect blue is definitely a good movie, but it gets really confusing as it gets into the middle part...
do check out grave of the fireflies too, donno if I can call it "great" because it's more like "powerful" than "great"
