Its sand, living sand that defends him, and Garaa has only ever been hit once, and it was by Rock Lee in the 3 part of the exam, and it didnt actualy hit his skin, it hit a layer of sand that he created over his body!!!!

it is not live sand it is sand he uses without chakra i think

dude his the thing on his back that has sand in it is also mixed with the blood of those he kills to put more chakra in his attacks , but they are mainly for defense
