Influence of Japan culture through anime and manga in the West-looking for an article

Greetings,

I am posting here because I am looking for a somewhat scientific (but not necessarily) article on the influence of japan culture through anime and manga in the west. I have a presentation to make, and I'm obliged to provide at least one good article to read to the persons present. Aside from that I'll talk, show some anime on the uni's class' big screen, show them different genre mangas and make them listen to some OSTs (I need to look into what anime to show, what mangas to show as well).

Anyone got any idea where to find that article?

I've sweeped through my uni servers, but only found an article that isn't quite what I'm looking for. And Google is even harder for a good scientific article.

Your presentation sounds great. But, I am sorry, I don't know a place where you can find a good article. Hope you will find it and your presentation turns great. If I come across one, I will let you know, soon...............

Re: Influence of Japan culture through anime and manga in the West-looking for an article

i don't think so, in my observation, most anime/manga fans THINK they know Japanese culture. However, i don't think you can fully understand anything by watching a show on it. Instead, i think it gives an awareness of culture, but not a teacher.

Many times people get arrogant in that way becuz they think the hours they've spent watching anime translates into how much they know about the Japanese.

in my opinion at least...

Re: Influence of Japan culture through anime and manga in the West-looking for an article

I suggest that you brew some relations between anime and the culture on your own. Study some interesting aspect of the Eastern culture, confirm if it is also in Japan and then assign an example from anime to it.
I don't think how accepting will your teachers be though. During past decades, any cartoon had an undertone of pornography. I thus suggest that you choose a serious piece(s) instead of fan service.
You could also avoid moe type anime, because again, some people consider cuteness repulsive. (I certainly don't )
Try to act as professional as possible, reduce the length of the snippets and immediately toss some facts about the culture on it to prevent the "we are entertaining ourselves" look.
I hope I was at least partially helpful.

Grumble Grumble Grumble

There is very little direct influence of Anime/Manga on western culture, but there are indirect influence via Hollywood media. You can also check the extras on the Animatrix DVD, which lists the anime series that were influential on the development of the 'Matrix' movies (Megazone 23, Akira, Ghost in the Shell). You can also search the Internet for the plagiarizism of Disney's movie 'Atlantis' with the Gainex Studio's first TV series 'Nadia, Secret of Blue Water', and the 'Lion King' with Osamu Tezuka's 'Jungle Emperor Leo' (which was distributed in the US under the name 'Kimba the White Lion')

Re: Influence of Japan culture through anime and manga in the West-looking for an art

Damnit I knew I had forgotten something! (the plagiarism story)

Well I did my presentation today and I must say the people like a lot the Bastard! AMV that I showed them, and they wanted to watch it till the end, so it's pretty good.

So I showed some AMVs, OSTs, Animes and different Manga genres, after having explained what is anime and the controversy over its definition, manga, osts, amvs, conventions, fansubbing, cosplay, conventions, fanfiction, japanese studies rising these last years, etc. And I must say I was pleased that they were interested in learning about it ^^

Thanks again for your help
