    Re: Japan and Suicides

I believe the fact that the reason why the Japanese have such a high suicide rate, this the lack on part of the japanese to change their beliefs with the times, even though the official religion is Shinto, the japanese culturally believe in the Bushido, which dicatates that to shame oneself or his family is punishable by death, a person should rather die than live with the shame, this puts alot of pressure on the peson's psyche due to outside stimuli, like most people said, the pressure of getting into a university, getting a job, losing a job, losing a husband or a wife, getting divorced, all these acts that are considered negative to the japanese register as an act of shame, and most people in Japan cannot live with that shame for fear of being alienated by it, therefore their only recourse in their minds is to take ther life so that the family cannot be shamed by it. Instaed of saying, the Mikaza family is shamed because their son didn't get into [insert] University, its oh their son died so that the family will not be shamed. Its also the fact that the japanese are very rigid and that they do not allow for changes in their codes, they cannot be flexible because it shows a sign of weakness on their part. But, as the times changed and more complex behavior was seen as shameful, Japan is now at a crossroads of looking at its identity and deciding whether it can really change.

    Re: Japan and Suicides

my great aunt...or my grandpas sister... married a japanese guy, then their kids were japanese who married japaneses and then they had kids that are japanese that live in Japan.

I don't know how they are related to me, some type of cousin I think.

But I keep in tact with them, they're around my age (14) and Sachi was telling me how her friend killed herself because she felt that her family expected her to be someone she couldn't be, as hard as she tried. and I thought that was so sad.

I've heard other stories like that, looks like there is a lot of high expectations in Japan.

    Re: Japan and Suicides

As for the suicide rate: True.
And why? Simple: The human body and especially brains are evolved to function best in the surroundings where they have little rules (only that the strongest male will beat them up if touching his females), comfortable temperature around 25°C (77°F), fruit hanging on every other tree etc. When this human is involuntarily put into a concrete box where he suffers from stress for long years, has to perform logical computations unheard of in the jungle, breathe dry air (compared to the humid forests), rush against time and be afraid that his friends will betray him to get in his place because they think it's better - the human will inevitably tend to escape from this environment. And frankly, where else can you escape than into your own grave?
