eh or to make it easier just take the arrow tool and move it lol but before that change the image size so that it will fit just change it to whatever u want for example if my sig is 400x115 then my pic will be about 200-350 see(^_^)

Ok, nice enough,

but about Merging., its nice to know so people still do that.
If you use certain effects, maybe different opcaities, layer blends, layer optionings, When you merge, it will always take the characteristics of the lower merging layer so youi'll loose some of the effect you were going for and whatnot,
its just best to leave layered work layered if you've done serious blending.

easiest way to put a pic on a sig, is open the pic (this will cause you to have two PSDs open), click on your 'move' tool and just drag your picture onto your sig psd. It should transfer there.

if you need to resize it, make sure you are on your picture layer. Select a 'selecting tool' (doesnt matter which one) right click and click "transform" you will see 6 resizing dots.

click on one of the corner dots and hold SHIFT while you resize to keep it in a unifomal size so you dont distort it.

aplly your skills to the rest of it and Boom, you got a sig

Mergeing can be a good thing, and bad thing. If you can't do something with out mergeing, then Merge, but More often then not, its better to keep everything in different layers, and NAME THEM, for the sake of organization. Like that Wallpaper that I showed you, I named every layer.

The reason for this is so that you can go and change something small and not effect major changes to the whole, which you might not want to do.

And take this wallpaper for example: SA . -flames-of-hell-

Layers (27 of them) were necessary to get the effect I needed. The background was made from a Stock photo from Morgue file: morguefile.com Archive: CIMG2894.JPG and uses Zarriffs Liquid abstract tutorial http://www.animeonline.net/tutorials...-abstract.html

The character her self is actually 5 layers, The main body, and the 4 elemental rings around her wrists and ankles, then add on the layers for flames that I wrapped around the rings, and the rest is for the background.

When used properly, layers are a god send, they make things much more easier. I've seen some wallpapers with 100+ layers and the wallpaper was B-E-A-utiful.
