Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

    Grumble Grumble Grumble

Released this week (for DVD Region 1) by Disney Home Entertainment was three Studio Ghibli Anime feature films. Of the three (which include 'The Cat Returns' and 'Porco Rosso') the most anticipated film is the uncut release of 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'. This film was produced by Hayao Miyazaki (who also did the Academy Award winning film 'Spirited Away'), and is generally considered one of his greatest works, and one of the greatest films made during the 'Golden Age' of anime. This film has one of the first 'Eco-Thriller' story plots in the history of Anime, and is based on the Manga series that Miyazaki wrote. (talk about a labor of love here...) The success of this Film resulted in the creation of Studio Ghibli, which is still considered one of the most prestigious anime studios in existence today...

Having just finished my DVD (in the original Japanese soundtrack), I would have to agree that the film earns its reputation. For any one who claims to be an Anime Fan, this film is definitely on the short list of must see Anime. For those of you who have seen the Disney digitally restored release, what did you think of the film??? (Now to go back and see how the english soundtrack is...)

I just watched the Disney release.

    IT WAS AWSOME!!!

I accept that they can't fit everything in it that was in the Manga and I'm cool with that. I'm just glad I finally was able to see the whole thing. The only copy I had was an old hacked job from who knows when. I can't believe how much they had cut!

    So in summery: WATCH IT!

Hey, it's a Miyazaki! How can it miss?

This is one of the must-have films in every collection alng with Spirited away, castle in the sky, porco rosso, the cat returns, and my neigborg totoro. They are excellent examples on how good and creative the artists at studio ghibli are....

Nausicaa is a thruly masterpiece and both the english and japanese tracks are well made, recomended to all ages.....

I'm so glad that Disney made the contract say they would not edit the content one bit!! I love Miyazaki's work so much and I will soon buy it, because I have known since a week ago that it came out already. (I've known since it was announced though) That makes me a giant Miyazaki fan!!^-^ I just can't wait till "Howl's Moving Castle" comes out in region 1!!

I have a copy of the Japanese special edition DVD (UK and Japan share the same region code ^^ ), and it's by far one of my favourite animes ever!

I didn't hear about this new release before now but I must say that i'm glad about it, even if it doesn't affect me. It's such an excellent anime, everyone who hasn't seen it is really missing out, even if they are not anime fans (considering it's Miyazakis lifes work, it's hardly surprising). If you can get it, buy it now. You will want to watch it again.

Hmmm... He's not technically human, so it wouldn't really be like cannibalism...

I saw this at the cinema's as part of a Ghibli film festival last year. In Japanese through, since the DVD isn't going to be released in Australia til the end of this month and the screeners probably didn't want to expose us to the awful "old" dub... before Disney re-did it.. loved this movie, it was very much like Mononoke in it's themes but it was still a absolute joy to watch. Very well made considering it's age, made in 1984, the movie is as old as me. ^^
I'm defanaitely buying this one as soon as it's released.
