No offense, but Duh!!!
It hurt me to find out that some people don't know what it is.
An operating system is the program that you use to look at all the data on your computer. Examples of operating sysems are: Windows95, WindowsXP, Macintosh OS, ect...
If you didn't know this, you know it now.
No offense, but Duh!!!
anyone got that miniMac yet, I wan't to see if it's worth $299
'Cause you give me something / That makes me scared, alright / This could be nothing / But I'm willing to give it a try / Please give me something
'Cause someday I might call you from my heart
I actually went to a COLLEGE course in keyboarding and the instructor's first day was explaining the parts on a computer. he said,
"do you all know what this is? this is called a MOUSE. and that square thing on the table in front of you is called the KEYBOARD. Now, do you all know what a computer is? Lets try turning it on, shall we? If you don't know how, please call me and I will assist you..."
That annoyed the living shti out of me!!!!!!!

Actually, it's quite a bit more complex then that.... A Operating System (O.S.) provides initialization and management of System Memory, Device Drivers (Hardware), Input/Output functions (Keyboard, Video), and the loading, initialization, and multi-tasking management of programs. The core of the Operating System, (back in ancient times, was called the Master Control Program) is usually refered to as the System Kernal. Modern Operating Systems, in addition to the system kernal, will bundle many more application and utilites
Also, back in ancient times, it wasn't necessary to have a O.S. in order to use a computer. The first generation of personal computers would initialize directly to its internal System BIOS, which would jump directly into a program in Flash ROM (Atari, Commedore), or a internal BASIC ROM (Apple, PC XT), or bootstrap a DOS program from a floppy disk boot track....

When you say "ancient times" do you mean the ancient egyptians using an abicus and such? How would you have an operating system for an abycus?
Grumble Grumble Grumble
As far as your concerned, 'ancient times' would mean 'Before you were Born!!!' And don't knock the poor abacus. US Govement test up through the late 1950s showed that an expert abacus operator could beat mechanical adding machines for addition and subtraction operations. And speaking of base 10 adding systems, did you know that the first successful electronic computer ('The ENIAC') was built with an internal 'Base 10' design instead of the current 'Binary' system used today...
