What causes me to be here
What reason do I take

What causes me to be still
My reason is opaque

Two hours since
I received by wire
A message from her, yet
I choose not to retire

To the sleep that calls

And so I wait,

Thirteen days since
Valentine’s day
A present left at her door
And taken away
By the one it is for

And so I wait,

A week from then
I received by phone
A message court
Not long
About the gift dropped
At her door

And so I wait,

A message by wire
A call from the screen
A note passed between nodes
On an information stream
A series of words
Passed between her and I

“It’s getting late”
She speaks to me
“I cannot wait”
“To leave you here
for heaven’s sake
but I must take
not a moment late
goodbye
you’ve been great”

She leaves

The door closes on the liquid screen

Not a moment
Not a word

And so I wait,
