    How long have you had the Drive? I think you might be right about it going bad

    Could be dead yup, it's possible, probably the lens being unable to grab info from that type of disc anymore. Anyways, DVD-Drives are cheap, you can get 16X multi DL burners for 90$

    To Read a DVD, the unit would use a different 'Laser' then for reading CDs. It could be that the DVD Laser is burnt out or obscured, which would explain the symptoms. It wouldn't hurt to try a DVD/CD Lens cleaner ('Cheap') before resorting to swapping out the unit...
