me and my friend are trying to transfer files from his desktop to my laptop.
do i NEED a crossover cable or is there a prog that lets you transfer files with just using a reg. LAN cable? i know my old teacher was using one, but i cant seem to find him around....
w/a crossover cable, you can connect directly with each other using the same cable.
otherwise, you'll need a hub or switch when using a regular network cable. so you'll need 2 network cables plus a hub or switch.
no extra software is needed as long as you're using the same ip range, subnet mask, and for ease, workgroup.
e.g.
laptop
10.0.0.1
255.255.255.0
computer
10.0.0.2
255.255.255.0
or you can do it by both connecting to an existing network (i.e. one at school...)
you will have to create a shared folder on your comp with annonymous write privelages if you are using XP otherwise you won't be able to transfer without letting the other person authenticate to your computer (by telling him username and passwd. BAD IDEA)
this only aplies to you if one or both of you is using ANY build of Win NT (includeing XP)

well since i dont have any hbs or etc., and i doubt he'll bring his desktop to school; i guess ill have to go out and buy a crossover cable...

yes!! and make sure you both have the network port before getting the cable!!!

get the crossover then setup as follows...
on both computers go to...the connection, right click
> Properties > General (tab)
highlight: Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
click: properties
select: Use the following IP address
computer 1 (doesn't matter which):
IP: 192.168.1.1 (or pretty much anything you want, valid numbers)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (should fill in for you automatically)
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (same as Comp 1 IP)
computer 2:
IP: 192.168.1.2 (notice not the same as comp 1)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 (same as Comp 1 IP)
and on both computers again....
Select: use the following DNS server address
Preferred DNS server: 24.244.2.4 (or anything)
Alternate DNS server: 24.244.4.2 (or anything, just not the same as above)
that's it for settings, make sure you have folders shared and everything (double check permissions).
