So you like listening to others being insulted? If it's not directed specifically at you it doesn't count? How does that make it a "good" song?

You're right, it's an excuse. You're also still missing the point. They are not meaningless.

Words have MEANINGS. They have DEFINITIONS. If you don't believe it then go back and read the definitions I gave you and take me up on my challange. Tell me how your mother reacted. Then tell me it doesn't mean anything.

(As for my reference, I looked up the "respectful" rappers that were recommended and read through the lyrics of two albums each. Try google.)

I just wanted to add this and ask you a quick question Meiwaku. You had said earlier

Wouldn't this also be considered grounds for pornographic film? So would pornographic film also be considered degrading or merely an expression of love in film?

I didn't exactly mean good lyrically.

I understand words have meanings so maybe I used the wrong word. What I was trying to say is that they only have a type of expression to them if a person thinks they do. If they don't then it doesn't affect them.

Pornographic films I see are on a different level. For one thing, people come to expect that pornos are like that, and it's not on mainstream television so pretty much people who choose to watch pornos can and people who don't want to don't have to.

Rap is mainstream and everywhere and anyone under 18 can access it with out it being law breaking. You listen to the radio and every second song is rap, you go to the movies and just about all the songs on the speakers track is rap, same with being at the mall and watching MTV or much music (Canadian version of MTV) they play rap music all over it, you really can't escape it and therefore what you see and hear offends.

Pornos are degrading but nobody is going around saying they aren't. I don't feel the need to be upset by pornography though, because it's not shoved in my face every 2 minutes and doesn't really influence people on an epic scale.

Re: Is rap music degrating to women?

I see your point Meiwaku, I had forgotten about that point of view. Mainstream Sexual conduct vs. Non-mainstream sexual conduct.

Here is the Legal Dictionary definition of Pornography.
por·nog·ra·phy
n.

Material that depicts erotic behavior and is intended to cause sexual excitement
- Pornographic material is protected expression unless it is determined to be obscene. However, child pornography is illegal under federal and state laws prohibiting the depiction of minors in sexual acts.

So it is protected expression unless they go beyond a certain limit.

I beg to differ

While physical abuse might seem worse, the scars of verbal and emotional abuse are deep. Studies show that verbal or nonverbal abuse can be much more emotionally damaging than physical abuse.

Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me. How many women think of that schoolyard rhyme while reeling from a partner's put-downs or angry outbursts? The rhyme's a lie, says Patricia Evans, author of The Verbally Abusive Relationship—the book that helped change Brandy's life. Cruel words can do worse than break bones: They can break your spirit, cripple your confidence, even make you physically ill.

Re: Is rap music degrating to women?

Emotional and psychological damage last longer and have an overall worse effect than physical damage. So I'll have to agree with Meiwaku on that.
