    Re: Remaking Old Movies

It just seems like they are suddenly remaking a lot of movies because it's all happening at once and it's not really that much of a coincidence. American society has this thing where an idea hits it off and suddenly everyone wants to jump on the band wagon and ride it out as far as it will go. Stuff like this goes in waves and it goes in and out but always seems to happen in a group.

Examples: Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. That evil creation of Satan spawned over 2 years of annoying, agonizing, boring and unoriginal game shows.

Realizing that TV shows that had real people and not actors was getting the viewers the second generation of horrific "reality" tv was pooped out "Survivor" which created the annoying can it please die already fad that is simply dubbed Reality TV. It's been a fad in the past, but like I said stuff like this comes and goes in waves. Thankfully with TV shows like Lost, The OC, and Desperate Housewives reality TV maybe on it's way out, because just like pop music did in the mid to late 90s till about 2002, it's LONG overstayed it's welcome.

So what is the popular fad in Hollywood as of late? Book Adaptations, Comic book adaptations, Video game adaptations, remakes. We are pretty much stuck in a limbo of adaptations, remakes, and true stories.

Examples being: (This is all from pure memory, so if I am wrong about some don't shoot me)

Comics: Spiderman, X-Men, Superman (Which also falls into remake), Hell Boy, Constantine, The Fantastic Four, Batman, Daredevil, The Punisher (Another remake I believe), Sin City, The Hulk, Elecktra, and yeah you get the annoying picture.

Books: Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Narnia the lion witch and the wardrobe, Memories of a Geisha, The Constant Gardener, Christmas with the Kranks, The Notebook, Prozac Nation, Jarhead, brokeback Mountian, Everything is Illuminated, shopgirl

Remakes: King Kong, Yours Mine and Ours, Cheaper by the Dozen, Guess Who (Remake of guess whose coming to dinner), Land of the Dead, Superman, Pride and Prejudice, War of the Worlds, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Longest Yard, The Fog, Dark Water, The Ring, The grudge, blahh I am too tired to think, but it's actually pretty funny how many movies we see thinking they are original are really remakes.

Ok I think you get my point,

One other thing, Hollywood seems to love making sequels to movies that did well at the box office cause the majority of movie goes are total retards, cept the only problem is the movies are worse than watching crap float in a toilet. To my horror and want to poke my eyes out from hearing they are actually making sequels (As high as like 4th generations) to Garfield, The Cat in the Hat, Scary movie (enough is enough!) They did it to Scooby Doo, Deuce Bigelow (WAHH)

With that all said, the day Titanic becomes a remake is the day I will probably end my life, I don't think I could go through all that again. And having to watch an old wrinkly saggy boobed Celine Dion in a wheel chair riding around on a stage with her wig flying in the wind and her heart giving out because her stupid song is not reality would just be too agonizing to witness. :|

I have to agree with you completely. Movies lately really do Suck!!! And a Titanic remake would haunt little kids worse than the boogie man.

    Re: Remaking Old Movies

I can't even remember the last movie I went to see in the theatre...I think it might have been Sin City, not too sure. But yeah, lately hollywood movies have just been on a downhill slide, and they wonder why the box office is tanking. Meiwaku hit it on the nose, that production companies just lock on to the latest fads and try to suck it dry before everyone jumps ship to the next fad.

Even though some remakes are good, the majority of them aren't really needed, and are just money grabs. I much prefer to watch foreign films, because there's way more depth in them, and they are more thought provoking. Foreign, and Independant films are the way to go. I'm sure that the foreign films also conform to some fad that is going on in whatever country it was made in, but as long as I don't know that, it's fine hehe.

The only company I absolutely LOATHE for sequels though, is Disney. I despise Disney anways, but even more so for sequels. They are poorly made, direct to video, and seem to come out days after the original is released in theatres. Just one big attempt to get as much money from consumers as possible. Arrrgh.

Actually the recycling of ideas is quite common in the movie industry ... just look at the number of B-grade wannabes come out after any major hit movie?

... or for that matter, look at the music scene, it is a very common practice to "contemporize" older songs for a new generation.

As the saying goes, where humans are concerned, there is very little new under the sun.

    Re: Remaking Old Movies

I don't think the industry is running out of ideas. as mentioned above it's just a phase that's going around at the moment.

If it wasn't for the movie adaption of Lord of the Rings, I wouldn't be obsessed with movie's in general ( I need to know what's coming out and when lolz, not that I have time to see the majority of ones which i want to see ). I wouldn't have read the book either.

Same with Resident Evil, it took me ages to see it, but when i did it inspired me to hire out one of the games, and look at me today, just a tad bit obsessed.

Movie adaption opens peoples eyes to different things I guess. They see the movie, and are inspired to go see the original or read the book what ever the situation is.

Some book to movies can be bad though. I'm sorry for any of you who like it but, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban really dissapointed me. I think they left out the best bits!!
