I've thought a lot about this. Have you ever dug out the <old console system here> and played a game you used to burn hours and hours on? Then, after 10 minutes or so, got kinda bored? While it might just be that Donkey Kong isn't that challenging, our perception of video games is constantly evolving.

Atari reigned in its day because the public enjoyed arcade style games: no learning curve, easily playable when drunk, poor graphics relying on active imagination. The 8-bit NES pushed that with more RPGs and storylines that kept players hooked. Nowadays, we scoff at a game if it doesn't have multiple components: puzzle, shooter, simulator, full motion cinematics. You can replay the old games, but you can't recapture that magic of imagination. Just shooting bricks at moving pixels isn't enough anymore.

    Unless we're drinking.

maybe you can't recapture it, but I can. I still get that same great feel from my old games since the first day I got them. Besides those components you mentioned irritate me sometimes. Especially the shooters. When the new games aren't nearly as long as the old, you almost wish the industry would just reflect back to the golden age once and awhile.

I've done that many times before. I use to be a BIG gamer. I went back and played FF8 before I ever got FF7 and played it ALL DAY LONG. I only stopped when I had no choice but to eat, or whatever. Needless to say, that I beat it in about a weeks time after leveling all my characters to LV 100 or close to it. It's always fun for me when I can take on a BOSS and sit there going... "Was that it? Man, and to think you use to be hard.... lol." It's always funny when a Boss CAN'T kill you too!!! I love playing the classics.

Far be it for me to be anything special, when the only special thing I desire with me, is the special person I share my gifts with.

The games in the past that were really good to play were Doom 1 and 2 and Quake 1 and 2. These games, to me, were the best first person shooters in the past. They were designed simple and were also a little challenging. These games were great to play. The only first person shooters that matched up to these titles was Unreal and Halo 1. I'm hoping the new Prey game and Quake 4, both coming for the xbox 360, will be as good as the previous titles.

Also, it's too bad the Beat-em-up games will never be as fun as they used to. Final Fight, Streets of Rage, Rivals, and some of those Jaleco titles for the super nintendo were really great. The side scrolling shooter games were good as well, such as Contra and Gunstar Heroes. They are trying to bring back the beat-em-up games by putting them in 3-d. Konami has a new title coming out and Capcom has showed previews to a new Final Fight(Starring Cody's brother). And there are side scrolling shooter games still releasing out there such as Alien Hominid, Gunstar Heroes sequel(coming for game boy advance) and a game that was made by SNK(forgot the title) and not to forget the new ps2 contra games.
