Yes, Sanzo was a different monk, but that's the whole point of the story. They changed it, it wasn't meant to be a direct interpretion of the original chinese version of Journey To The West. In the merchandise/ cards..etc.. they label him as "The ill-mannered monk". They changed the story and the characters.

well most of the anime and tv series and movies that are based on a book they mostly change it so it will fit more to the taste of the viewers and so the story will be understood more clearly

You know, i'm surprised none of the chinese have complained about how Sayuki insults "The Journey To The West". After all, its one of their um... four big classics(?) I don't know what they're called in english so i did a direct translation from chinese. But i bet they're called something else.
