It is a choice to kill, yes. But it is society that makes a person or breaks a person, which contributes to the way a person acts. It's not totally to blame, it's a major factor.

I don't really see how someone can be born a serial killer, I think it all depends on their life choices, their views, society, etc.

i think i read somewhere that most serial killers are usually very intelligent people and when asked why they usually come up with a fairly straight forward, good answer. something like
"the people i kill, i kill for they are the oppitomy of todays society which is inherently evil due to the greed that man surfers from. and so to benifit man as a whole these overly greedy people must be eliminated" i think that was one murderers answer to why.

also you get people who murder for justice, they might have evidence that someone is a serial rapist but thinks that the police (in england atleast) will not deal with siad person sevearly enough.

also modern day life is extremely stress full and living in citys and working with certain types of people can push you over the edge.

Well I beg to differ. Besides here's another definiton:

    mass murder
A mass murder (massacre) involves the murder of large numbers of people either by a state or an individual. This should not be confused with serial killers, who usually to kill one person (or perhaps two) at a time.

The largest mass killings in history have been attempts to exterminate ethnic and other groups; for more about this subject see genocide. This article refers to non-genocidal mass killings.

Although "genocide" does not necessarily require actual killing, only acting on a plan to exterminate an ethnic group, mass murder by definition involves killing a large number of people.

Well I think it might be both the person's environment and mental stability.......I mean if a person is mentally instable but people around him cares for him/her, tells him/her what's wrong and what's right, and gives him love and affection, I don't think that person will become a serial killer. Or if a person is mentally stable, but had a bad childhood or environment, i don't think he/she will become a serial killer, well not by choice!

We all choose what we want to be and what we want to do.....I mean you can kill someone in a war to save your country, but that doesn't give you the right to kill someone anytime you want. We all make our choices, if your parents are bank robbers, it doesn't mean your going to be a bank robber, not unless you choose to be bank robber too.

Being a serial killer is not created, it is by choice. People say it could be hereditary too, well I only know diseases or illnesses to be hereditary, being a serial killer or a murderer is not a disease! You either become serial killer or a hairdresser....that is your choice!

It depends on the individual in question, really. There are far too many variables involved in these situations to simply dismiss serial killers, in general, as being unquestionably insane. It can certainly be rightly said that there are a good many serial killers who are indeed insane, but to imply that they all are is intellectually fallacious, as there are many, many individuals who have chosen to pursue such a path who are very sane. Some of them, actually, are some of the most logical, intelligent people in our society, methinks.

As far as the motives behind an individual's decision to kill, I don't believe one's behavior can simply be blamed on the ills of our society, but I do believe that one's environment plays a heavy-handed role in influencing one's actions.

They may be smart and intellectual, but anyone that can kill someone in the mannor in which they do is insane, in that sence.

but also take in acount what the killer has been threw for example if an x solder were to start reliving his war/post dramatic exsprince(dont know if thats spelled right) then he would feel confused thats why when a person retires from the service after serving in a war they have him/her go threw tharipy to reajust him/her in him/her prevuse envierment so things like mass murder like in ranbow3 after coming from the war he went all crazy and started hunting and f**king with the cops of that town

Do to others as you see fit

Do bear in mind that not all serial killers adhere to the same methodology.
