    Re: Sex in the media

If there is not sex in the media there is not business, that's one of the many steps that the media has to meet if they want to make money out of consumers (us).
The funny thing about this is that we are complaining about it when we are the ones that are making their sales go up.

    1. There can be buisness without sex in the media. Believe it or not there are some ads that don't cash in on sex appeal. And some of these ads with no sex appeal are very successful. ex. The meow mix song. Did you find that cat irresistable or what?
    2. I am in no way complaining, I like seeing hot women, not just on TV but on billboards and in newspapers and magazines. Yup I just like hot women. I don't want every ad to be a fine chick (I don't want to be desensitized or anything) but I don't mind them being there. I mean think about it what would you rather see instead a goldfish modeling for Victoria's or maybe a horse modeling teeth whitener. I say keep the hotties.

Thinking is the leading cause of death among the stupid.

Example of very successful (and entertaining) ad without sex appeal:
    http://www.ad-awards.com/inc/video.swf?id=154

though any by spike jonze work, really.

What I like about this ad is that though it's blatantly appealing to males' libidos, it's less stupid than a "buy X now!!!11!" ad.

    Re: Sex in the media

    Does sex sell ?

Yes, actually it does ... and quite well too. for many reasons ...

... and the reason that "non-sexually oriented" commericals or practices are not more widely used is because it usually takes more time and effort to compensate for the effect that sex has on the viewer or recipient of the advertisement. Not to mention, that sex as a motivator is fundemental to our very existence and as such "timeless" in its relevence ... the non sexual advertising device (in more cases than not) will have a "shelf life" of relevance or demographic interests ... transitory in the way fads are.

I suppose a good metaphor for the use of sex in selling ... is like the problem facing an automotive engineer ... who has the goal of designing an engine with more horsepower ...

The first option is to design the motor with more displacement (more cubic inches) ... a bigger engine. Relatively simple - scale up the existing design and tweak for stress and projected load factor.

    ...or ...

The designer can utilize research on ways to increase horsepower with the same sized engine ... which can be achieved (but at cost in R & D and materials) by means of exotic fuels, forced air systems (blower or turbo), exotic materials which are more heat resistant or lighter ... but inevitably more expensive and tempramental.

Sex in selling is like the big motor ... advantage by brute force ...

Non-sex in selling is like the latter ... advantage by refinement but at significant costing factor.

... and so, if the bottom line is to use ads to make a profit ... then part of the equation will be th cost and effectiveness of the ads ...

So, it comes down to sex is a reliable seller and comparatively cheap and foolproof ... with those qualifications, the promoters rarely go elsewhere for their strategy ... unless they have to.

SamIam. Bravo! what an amazing use of knowledge. Comparing sex to cars is pretty common but comparing sexual advertising to horse power is very insiteful and still feels right. Far better than my Meow Mix example. What was I thinking?

    Re: Sex in the media

Essentially, what you're both saying is this:

    1. Because the point of a company is to increase its value, the greater profit gained per cost (monetary efficiency), the more successful the company.

    2. Because inserting sex into any ad adds a great amount of profit at a minimal cost, it increases monetary efficiency

    3. Because 1 & 2, therefore sex is profitable.
