Right, so I just graduated, and my mom is thinking of helping me buy a computer as a present. I think together we should have about $1000.
I don't need anything particularly fancy, just capable of running most games without freezing up and internet use. I am willing to build my own, as I have done it before for my computer classes.
So does anyone have recommendations of specific computers or sites to look at?

If your thinking of taking your new system to college, your probably better off getting a package deal from Dell or Gateway. Sure, the cost of the computer hardware is cheaper is you build your own, but once you consider the retail cost of the bundled software of a package deal, (Microsoft Office, etc.) the package deals turn out to be far less expensive...
Oh, that's a good point, I hadn't thought of that. Will I be able to use the software my family has though? I am pretty sure I won't be able to use the OS, because of the CD key, but can I use anything else? Or is it all tied into the OS?Quote:

Each piece of software has its own licencing agreements. If you don't want to worry about any of that, buy one pre-built and software bundled. you can use a linux OS. that is totaly free.
reduces the extra expences all the way down to the cost of getting a friend oe neighbor to download and burn you the install disks for the prefered distrobution.
One problem with that though, is if you don't have any sort of Linux Programs with it, then your screwed if say your teacher wants you to make like a powerpoint, or flash file or something like that.Quote:

Thanks for all the advice, guys! I'll take a look at newegg, and I'll also strongly consider buying a premade. I kinda want to try out the custom made just because I've never done it for myself before, and it would be pretty cool to use a computer I built myself.
As for linux, I like it, but like sorrowfulkiller said, typically not game compatible.
