    Those who came before...

I have grown up on stories of my ancesters but I just recently learned a new one.

My great-great-grandfather, when he was 22 and a bachelor, was asked when he was going to get married. He told them he was waiting for Mary Jane to grow up. Now Mary Jane was a sweet girl that was always the first to help anyone in need. If anyone said "could somebody...." she was right there to do it and as a result her nickname by then was "somebody". Her age? 7 years old. He waited 13 years and then married her when she was 20 and he was 35.

It get's better. After they were married there was trouble between the Indians and the settlers where they lived. His job was to carry the mail on horseback and it didn't matter if the Indians were running around killing people the mail had to go through. So when things got bad and all the settlers were headed for the forts he told Mary that his life depended on her NOT going because the Indians would be watching and if they thought she was afraid of them they would kill him. So she refused to go to the fort no matter how much people begged her.

Well while he was out on his ride during the worst of it two Indians came riding up to their home. She feed them and they went to sleep in front of the fire. In the morning she needed to do her houswork so she woke one of them with a broom. He jumped up knife in hand, then saw it was her, laughed, and took the broom from her to do the same thing to his friend. Then they rode off.

My Grandfather knew none of this...but... as he was getting to the part of his route where he was sure he was going to be ambushed two Indians rode out of the brush to either side of him and escorted him through the ambush area. At the end of the ride one of them turned to him and told him he had a brave wife, then they rode off without another word.

My point to all this? Learning about our past, about those who came before, can not only give us a better understanding of that past but also why we are the way we are. I look at my line and see a great number of fearless, educated women (some might even say stubborn). Mary Jane's mother was on a board of a University at a time when most women didn't even go. Guess what a major priority is in my family?

So here's the question.... what stories do you know about those who came before you?
What kind of world did they live in?
    Do you know?

My great Granfather was a famous monk named Shiroshi Sataiyo. He even helped the Emperor once. This was back in the begining of Japan.

I don't know much... but I know one of my ancestors on my mother's side was one of the orginal convicts that got sent over to Australia with the First Fleet in 1788, and was part of the very first white settlement on the country.

Don't know whether to be proud or not, on one hand he was a theft, who got deported for stealing a horse, but on the other hand... he was one of the first men who helped build the modern Australian civialisation.

Well one of my ancestors on my mother's side was Luther (not King, the protestant Luther). Interesting that such a man would be my ancestor. I don't know if it influenced much people in my family, but none's a catholic.

Perhaps you should think more into your stories. Or add a crap load of Greats if he was your real grandfather, and he was around in the beginning of japan.

On my Dads side, we have some Relatives that were killed by indians in the Late 1800s. It was even named the Huff Family Massacre. http://www.sheriff.co.wise.tx.us/huf...y_massacre.htm
