Ecstasy trials for combat stress 17-02-2005 02:44 (#2753329)
American soldiers traumatised by fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are to be offered the drug ecstasy to help free them of flashbacks and recurring nightmares.
The US food and drug administration has given the go-ahead for the soldiers to be included in an experiment to see if MDMA, the active ingredient in ecstasy, can treat post-traumatic stress disorder.

Scientists behind the trial in South Carolina think the feelings of emotional closeness reported by those taking the drug could help the soldiers talk about their experiences to therapists. Several victims of rape and sexual abuse with post-traumatic stress disorder, for whom existing treatments are ineffective, have been given MDMA since the research began last year.

Michael Mithoefer, the psychiatrist leading the trial, said: "It's looking very promising. It's too early to draw any conclusions but in these treatment-resistant people so far the results are encouraging.

"People are able to connect more deeply on an emotional level with the fact they are safe now."

He is about to advertise for war veterans who fought in the last five years to join the study.

According to the US national centre for post-traumatic stress disorder, up to 30% of combat veterans suffer from the condition at some point in their lives.

Known as shell shock during the first world war and combat fatigue in the second, the condition is characterised by intrusive memories, panic attacks and the avoidance of situations which might force sufferers to relive their wartime experiences.

Dr Mithoefer said the MDMA helped people discuss traumatic situations without triggering anxiety.

"It appears to act as a catalyst to help people move through whatever's been blocking their success in therapy."

The existing drug-assisted therapy sessions last up to eight hours, during music is played. The patients swallow a capsule containing a placebo or 125mg of MDMA - about the same or a little more than a typical ecstasy tablet.

Psychologists assess the patients before and after the trial to judge whether the drug has helped.

The study has provoked controversy, because significant doubts remain about the long-term risks of ecstasy.

Animal studies suggest that it lowers levels of the brain chemical serotonin, and some politicians and anti-drug campaigners have argued that research into possible medical benefits of illegal drugs presents a falsely reassuring message.

The South Carolina study marks a resurgence of interest in the use of controlled psychedelic and hallucinogenic drugs. Several studies in the US are planned or are under way to investigate whether MDMA, LSD and psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can treat conditions ranging from obsessive compulsive disorder to anxiety in terminal cancer patients.

I would be careful trying to use that to justify lowering or removing jail time for pushers here. There are several of us who would like to see some severe changes in those particular punishments (castration has been mentioned).

Castration is a joke, good old corperal punishment and repayment to society in the form of manual labor would be more appropriate. I am interested in what you have to say after reading the articles I posted, though. It just happens that I know multiple people with their medical marijuana card and can honestly say it has IMPROVED their lifes tenfold. One guy has metal rods in his back and is paralized from the waist down, and the other girl has... cancer Without medical marijuana she had developed wasting syndrome (can't keep ANYTHING down, side effect from chemotherapy) and was getting to a dangerously low weight when cannabis was suggested BY THE DOCTER as a possible treatment. Lo and behold, it worked like a charm and even had added side benefits of helping with pain and major depression. It's truly beautiful to see her going from tiny and majorly depressed to finally be able to laugh, or tell a joke again. If only for a moment...

I won't argue with you on medical marijuana, I haven't made my mind up on it. I fail to see how legalizing drugs across the board is benificial to society however. If you have taken the time to read the thread you will have noticed multiple reasons why. Also not all of us don't give a care if "You want to kill yourself ? Spend your days slamming heroin ? That is your perogative, but it's a waste...". Since those people killing themselves are our families and friends you will have to forgive some of us for taking it personally.

When I have several hours I will be happy to look at your links. I can't say anything for the others here though.

If I may quote myself though in refence to some sites similar to the first one you published.
My problem with organizations like the one you quoted is that they claim they just want whats best but if they really believed it should be used medicinally they would try and get it passed by the FDA as a medicinal drug that can then be perscribed and distributed by pharmisists. By only trying to get it legalized across the board and remove any legal penalties for anyone who takes it medically or otherwise they only show their true purpose. It isn't about the medical benifits for them, it's about being able to get their hit without getting in trouble. Personally I think they hurt the cause of medical marijuana more then help it.
Evidently you don't have a problem with that however.

Actually there is currently several cannabis prescriptions on the market, marinol, to name one, and several others including a new throat spray. Yes, I will crusade for personal freedom. It has nothing to do with 'getting caught', it has to do with standing up for what I believe in, you know ? I don't personally see anything wrong with smoking a joint, or taking a shot of alcohol. They are the exact same in my book, intoxicants, with alcohol being a much more dangerous substance to work with. So no, I don't have a problem with that.

A couple hours to look at the links ? It took me less then ten minutes to find what I wanted in said articles, mainly testimony from the AMA (american medical society), APHA (american public health association) and oxford university. These are staterun operations specifically designed to objectivly weigh benefits vs drawbacks... Seems pretty trustworthy to me...

You still have not answered why it is you have this current stance towards cannabis, care to explain ? I would greatly appreciate a peek into why you believe what you do...

Friends got in trouble ? Family ? Republican partys order ?

I'm not one to give orders or even suggestions, but you really might want to make up your mind about medical marijuana. There a thousands of people who deal with unnessisary pain even though multiple clinical trials PROVING it's effectiveness as treatment simply because their state has not raised enough votes to approve it's use yet. You could really help them....

I encourage you to at least educate yourself on the subject, do a little reading from both sides and i'm sure you will come to the conclusion that fits you best. Simply sitting back and not thinking about it ? Well, in my oppinion that is unfair to all the people who genuinly *need* this medication.

Be careful when you introduce the issue of Marinol into this debate, because it is a two edged sword. The last I heard on the subject, is the inhaled version of Marinol was refused to be certified by the FDA because of the potential for abuse of the drug. (Stupid FDA!!!) Had they approved the inhaled version of Marinol, there would now be ZERO JUSTIFICATION for the use of medicial Marijuana, and the legal basis that states have used to support it's use...
