I heard awhile ago it was suppose to go into the 60's but I guess they never got around to finishing it.

Actually, the producers committed the common anime series sin of catching up the the manga/novel series it was based on... There is a lenghty list of series that have done this, such as Inuyasha, Lodoss Wars, X TV, Hellsing, Naruto
