I might as well add the site for Gibson Research ( http://www.grc.com ) which has FREE useful tools to check the security settings of your Windows XP, and useful utilites (designed for the beginner) to turn off the DCOM and Messenger Service

And since it hasn't been mentioned yet. The location for the Official security notices for Microsoft (as well as some Trojan/Virus/Worm Removal tools, and the Spyware Removal Beta) is http://www.microsoft.com/security

The Official page for Mozilla and Firefox security notices is at http://www.mozilla.org/security

    Not downloads but useful nonetheless

    AVG Antivirus (Free) - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Another Non-Download however, useful resource site is Microsoft's Knowledge Base, search/query topics of discussion which deal with error reports and issues regarding Microsoft Products.

I've got a Free little ram utility that optimizes your ram useage called "Free Ram XP". I've been using it for a couple years now since the Screensavers had it as a Download of the Day.

It works on the following Platforms: Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP (NT4.x is unsupported).

    Discription from their site:

Freeware application to free and optimize your computer's RAM (Random Access Memory), resulting in an increase in system performance and productivity. Automatically configures itself for ease of use and also features advanced options and customizability. FreeRAM XP Pro has been designed to be easy to use yet highly customizable by computer novices and experts alike.

    Features and options include:

    • automatic, real-time memory monitoring and optimization
    • fast, threaded memory freeing with stop option
    • AutoFree option intelligently optimizes RAM without sacrificing performance
    • system metric and performance monitors
    • advanced tray support
    • memory reporting and diagnostic logging
    • simple, attractive interface
    • RAM-cuts (RAM-freeing Windows shortcuts)
    • Customizable Windows hotkey support
    • More options and customizability

This little gem of a program keeps my computer running smooth as silk, allowing me to do things that I wouldn't normally be able to do on my system

For those that like have a crap load of wallpapers (like I do from the old AO) and you want to have them automaticly change www.webshots.com is a good program you can set it to run with a time limit of 1 hour to 24 hours.

StyleXP also offers this feture if you have StyleXP

usefull little program from microsoft (the dreaded overlord of terror)

    tweakUI (for XP only)
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...ertoySetup.exe

and for itanium systems (you lucky dogs.... also XP only)
    http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...Setup_ia64.exe

a wonderful utility to completely (to a certain extent :-s) your user interface from within windows... so no extra RAM useage....

not as powerful as StyleXP but fun to play with (among other things you can change the icon overlay for your shortcuts, turn on or off "tab complete" to work from the command line, etc....)
