I think its about how the american society looks at anime, since anime is cartoons, americans asociate cartoons with childhood and think that only kids watch cartoons, if you go to japan I think you will find the situation quite different

yeah lately there is a few cartoons that are not for children like family guy, south park simpsons ect, but most of these are controversial and are nothing like anime.

Let me tell you something. My grandfather is 92 years old, and he still gets a kick out of anime. Yet some shows are inappropriate, so he doesn't watch them. He was police swordsmen and worked in military, so he basically loves watching action types. I admire him for his sheer enthusiasm.
