For some, yes. However, most have a different reason. the "female sapect" of anime has a certain alure and atmoshphere, and I'm NOT talking about sexuality. females have an effect in anime that males... just don't. I don't know how exactly to explain it, but that's the way it is.

well some people like hot girls as their avatars for two reasons;
1. they like hot girls.
2. they are weird.

Right, character development. The greatest thing about anime. It creates an attachment with the characters not possible in reality. And yes, I know, it's wierd.
