Simple. They come from different generations, have different objectives, think differently, and have different experiances. The child and the parent see things in a different light, so they go about things differently. not to mention the diffeence in maturity.

Cool Re: why is it so hard?

first things to go with age is how they think...so that's why we can't really understand our parents

Because it doesn't make sense until you are one (and that doesn't just hold for children, my single friends don't get it either). Children don't have the experience to understand where their parents are comming from and most people are lousy communicators so the parents stink at explaining it.

Also alot of people in general have trouble understanding anything that doesn't directly benifit them (and that goes for both parents and children) nor are they in the habit of taking others into consideration when making decisions or simply speaking to/about/around them. Throw in personality conflicts (people tend to be disturbed the most by their own traits in others, something their children/parents tend to have in spades) and things get really confusing.

The biggest reason though is simply that neither one takes the time to listen to the other and try to understand.

In fairness to the children parent aspect of different opinions. People in general disagree, no two people (related or not) think alike. And people are naturally independent people especially in the U.S.. Everyone wants his/her space and when they feel like that space is being violated this becomes a problem.

In the case of child and parent, the parent feels like they do alot for their child so they deserve to have a say in some of the things the child does, especially thing they know are wrong. And children naturally want to be more independent, especially the more they learn about the world.

well umm parents tell me because teenagers frontal lobes (a decision making in our brain) stops working or something so we cant think straight. but i think its really because once you get to your parents age you forget what it was like when you were a teen and they probly dont want you to make the same mistakes they did.
