In some cases, it because people think theyre always right about a certain thing, both the parent and child saying theyre right, but not considering what the other is saying most of the time...

Um.... so you saying because they are older they don't understand such things. Each generation goes through the same cycle, so don't think that this is some new thing because it isn't. Whether it be video games, dancing, cars, pinball, music, each generation feels that they are newest thing on planet earth and thier parents are old farts who never fell in love, had fights with thier parents, was/wasn't popular in HS or College. While your mom may be 30-50, i bet she still remembers what it was like when she was younger.

It is the same old story, I can see it now. 7000 years ago when the young son learned how to grow food instead of hunting it and the father sitting here "Back in my day, we had to hunt our own food; skin it too!" and the son saying "Man dad, you don't understand anything do you"

The world changes alot with each passing year which makes changes by the decade seem like giant changes. Technology, cities, culture, medical treatments, fashon, all these things and more change constantly making the world different with every passing day. But one thing is for sure, basic human nature doesn't change nearly as quickly. the difference between people with a gap of say 5 generations may be night and day, but that is only due to small changes from one to the next. And all have felt that they were so different and that their parents didn't understand. By being a little different you are just being the same.

There were always things that one generation had as kids that the last didn't. Ok so look at your X-box example, my parents didn't have one but they had the Odyssey gaming system. They got the first of the gaming platforms which I'm sure their parents didn't understand the appeal of. Their parents got the color T.V. and their parents befor them got b&w T.V. then radio then electricity and phones. It just keeps on going back.

Its hard to understand the mindset of parents mainly because of the age gap, just like how siblings with an age difference of 7 and above can hardly see eye to eye. Children, teenagers and adults all have different perspectives of things they like and don't like; when interest differ, personalities usually clash and that makes it hard to understand each other.

Spot on PsiKnot!^_^ The trend constantly changes, youngsters tend to fancy the current creations and parents who can't accept them because of their attraction to the old often end up not being able to understand the appeal of certain things to their children.
