    Xbox 360, Revolution, PS3

Well, after being gone for a long time, reading a ten page topic in the debate room Gallcomp just closed, and looking for a topic to post in that's interesting, I decided to start a topic myself.

If anyone has read the April edition of "connect" in Game Informer Magazine(subscribers will have this edition) than you should have heard about the next gen of gaming consoles. While they just discovered that the new "cell" chip in the ps3 can reach higher than 4.0 ghz-4.6 ghz(pc's only reach 3.8), there seems to be some troubling news on behalf of the next xbox entitled "xbox 360"(not the best name to come up with). This system will be coming out in November of this year. They've opted for the standard dvd drive instead the supposed HD-DVD drive. Probably not the wisest choice since HD-DVD's hold 50 gb and standard DVD's hold up to 8gb(gb stands for gigabytes). Also, they've sent game developers the "alpha" kits but won't send the "beta" kits until may which gives developers 5 months to make some release titles(so don't be expecting halo 3 the first day). The system will be smaller than the xbox. They are still deciding whether to have a hard drive add-on, or include a 512 mb Hard drive with it. I would prefer the latter option considering sony's HD-failure with the ps2. Microsoft is doing all of this so that the system will not cost too much for people handle. More news is that Xbox 360 startup will be more like windows xp, including a background changing option, with menu system and possibly IE when you start your system up. The also are thinking of making it a little like Tivo as well, recording certain things on your xbox 360.

As for Nintendo's revolution, they are thinking of having a touch screen controller. That's right, you configure your own commands on a touch screen, no buttons whatsoever. Nintendo also wants all developers to make sure to take full advantage of the touch screen in their games, which makes it harder to just port a game to the system. This decision right here could make nintendo lose some more supporting developers from the many they have lost already. I just think Nintendo is ahead of their time, and they need to really think about what the average consumer wants instead of something completely different from what people will expect.

Ultimately, the powerhouse in this whole ordeal seems to be Sony. They have the right things and also the new blu-ray technology which companies are already supporting. The only bad thing about the Ps3 is figuring out how to cool down the cell chip because from reports it is said to overheat way too easily way too quickly. Also, the price may be considerably high for the ps3, but people said the same thing about the ps2, and look what happened. Sony seems to be the only company making the solid decisions and the right moves. And with this Xbox 360 not going to be what everyone hoped for and also the touch screen of revolution hindering developers, I feel that one of the companies is going to suffer the same fate as sega and the dreamcast.

Any opinions about this are welcome. I'm curious to know what others think of this news.

I the only thing that'll make me lose my respect for nintendo is if they don't come out with Super Mario 128. I've been anticipating it's release since the cube came out, and I don't want to be dissapointed. As for the touch screen thing, you may be right about the before it's time thing. Unless the games they pull off with a touch screen are fabulous, they might lose their "touch" in the game making department. ps3, I've heard rumors of virtual reality specs? I don't know if my friend was bullshitting me or not, but the idea might finally make 1st person shooters WORTH playing. Xbox 360? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard, again, the only reason anyone will get it is for Halo. I don't see what Microsoft thinks it's accomplishing with being in this industry, I still don't think they're that good at it. And I also think it'll be Xbox that'll fall as Sega, because nintendo, they may not be "as good" as they used to be, but they haven't backed down in the past, why would they now?

Microsoft and Bill Gates have just as enough backbone as Nintendo does, that's why it will be interesting to know which one loses more money. Losing money can make any strong company rethink their strategy, the proof is obviously sega. Don't let the Nintendo fan boy in you think that nintendo has been doing all of the right things, because they haven't. Each one of the three companies has faults, and nintendo has the biggest ones. If they keep losing developers, then nintendo will be making games for nintendo, and that isn't entirely good.

I know nintendo hasn't been doing everything right. I hate several of their games. That's their only problem, here's the mistakes,

    Wind Waker
    StarFox Adventures
    Super Mario Sunshine
    Pikimin
    Luigi's Mansion

just to list a few, these games raped the bad ass of the N64 ones, and NOW they got the hint that people liked bad ass link, people like flying around in spaceships people like shooting guns! The only huge improvment was Metroid Prime, which even you have to admit is an awesome game. They still have other shooters and stuff, Medal of Honor, Tony Hawk, Soul Caliber, and a few others, but I think it's their decisions in their own material that's killin them. They need to restore their relations with Square if you ask me, and get some real FF games. But Xbox they weren't original from the start. Halo is there only good side if you ask me, more than half their library are derived from it's PC version, and I am so bored with shooters I can't stand it. One of out of every 3 games for Xbox is probaly a shooter, it's getting old.

I don't think the new Xbox can counted out that easily.
The future will be found in online gaming according to many "specialists" and the microsoft people are the best and most experienced of the three on that aspect.

They have a monopoly in the computer industry, they won't allow nintendo or sony a chance without some way of making more money than them. Nintendo, I don't know why, thinks the opposite that online gaming is not worth exploiting, while Sony is fighting that battle against Microsoft. I personally don't like online games, because my computer's slow and sucky anyway.

Even though you make some good points, Hassun makes another good point. Online is where it's at. And since xbox live is only getting better, all xbox 360 needs is a solid MMORPG and more japanese and japanese influenced titles to have everything they need. What scares me about xbox 360 is the fact that they opted for the regular dvd drive. If they had a hard time fitting halo on one disc, how do you think the twice as good next gen games will fit on these discs. PS3 is the strong arm, and they will most likely eat up the competition just like they did for Sega, and like game informer said, "It's lunch time again for Sony".

More like if Microsoft can get an RPG better than FF, just plain get Square to join them they have it made. But I don't think they're smart enough to do that, Microsoft is run by a nerdy american who likes guns apparently, so unless Microsoft reads this thread, they probaly won't make any decent MMORPGs.
