right, but it's still a ported Anime, so it works as a comparison. Imagine Zatch dubbed by the people at 4kids... 0.0

I'm in agreement that the anime has great capacity for being dubbed badly. I think, perhaps, that by its very nature, 4kids wouldn't have latched onto it. It doesn't feel much like their style - it's too thoughtful at times. (though... at other times I wonder why I'm watching it. The characters can be SO stupid... Like when Tia's making lunch for Zatch and pretends it's for Kiyo... Uh.. no.)

For the record, I think it's quite closed-minded to simply write something off as a kid's show. Sometimes the ones labled as 'children's' anime can be some of the funniest material...

This anime is really quite funny, though I would definitely prefer to be watching it in Japanese. ^_^ I love anime with lots of wierdness, and this doesn't disappoint. There also appears to be a more serious side to it, although not to deep it's still I nice contrast.

It's not just that they're funny, it's that some of their material is also geared toward adult (or at least teen) understanding more than child understanding - they're written so that they're accessible to children, but also so that older people can watch them and find them entertaining. Their target audience is less restricted than that which most U.S. production companies tend to limit themselves to.

Indeed. But this underestimation pretty much happens with every bit of subculture on the planet. Except for mainstream culture. There's nothing to underestimate about that . But I think it's not just Zatch, it's anime in general that people think are for kids, simply because it's animation, and cartoons are for kids.... But not really. Honestly, what people say about Zatch, it's not going to make me stop watching it. It may make me see it in a new light, but that's if it has any sort of legitimate claim. If it's just mindlessly bashing it, I completely tune out.

Hmmmm. My psychology professor used to say that we're all kids all our lives, we just get better and better at hiding it as we get older. I don't care if people say it's for kids. Some of the anime that takes itself more seriously is even more immature, it just doesn't seem that way because it's fashionable now. Zatch can be entertaining for all ages.

I agree. I've seen people aged from like 12 to 30 watch this show. I work in a video store, and a lot of people ask for it too.

I'm surprised. I wouldn't think anime itself would be a particularly often-rented genre. Is that typical, or is it just some kind of recent fluke?

As for the philosophy arguments... I don't follow that stuff very well, never been much to introspection. I do note, though, that when I watch ZB, it seems to pull everyone in the room in without complaint. So *something* you guys are talking about is probably right.

Though...Eh, I do prefer Fullmetal Alchemist.
