Those once hopeful in Carthage mourn and pray,
But this be what mighty Jupiter has to say;
In a temple to your father you swore and oath
Vowed to hate Rome; Hannibal and his brothers both,
Before he went off to fight the first Punic War.
Came back dead and the sons set to even the score.
When forced, the Alps you decided to cross
And fought through Roche Blanche but not without loss.
Mars was proud in Cannae of the hell you raised.
Though with waves of reserves Rome was barely phased.
Of having to go from home so long most men grieve.
But it was enemies lands you didn’t want to leave.
Oh yes close to victory you came
But she is a tough mistress to tame.
More than other hawks under Roman storm clouds you flew higher.
But Hannibal you were one man, and Rome is a vast empire.
Baal and Mars sigh but you did what you could.
Though through best efforts Rome’s empire still stood.

A well made poem, I'm a huge history buff and I think you caught the feeling of the history in the poem. Coincedently my college class just discussed the interaction between carthage and rome.
Crazy people don't know they're going crazy. They think they're getting saner.
