Not My Song
If that melody was meant for me,
I'd play it over and over
Every note
would be a symphony
I'd hold my breath at every break,
and fall in love with every crescendo
Every measure
would scrawl itself across my heart
and I'd sing in front of strangers
no matter how many stares it brought
If those words were written for me,
I'd cherish every syllable
Every letter
would find its place
I'd spell out the rest of our lives
in the lines of a four minute song
Every comma
would seem to last a lifetime,
and I'd worry over the periods
as though they really meant the end
If the croon of your voice was for me,
I'd never turn my head away
Every breath
would whisper in my ear
I'd keep my eyes on your lips
to follow along with all you said
Every gesture
would catch my gaze
and I'd remember every move you made
on the day you finally sang for me
If only that song was mine,
I'd know that you were too
But every part
belongs to someone else
So I'll keep singing to myself
and hope that some day
The song I sing
is the one you wrote for me.

Further proving why I think you’re the best poet on this site and one of my favorite poets’ altogether. I loved the concept and you used the elements of a song to beautifully sell it all. I was happy when I saw you had posted a poem earlier today and only regret not having been able to read it till now, 10's from me
WoW. My hand stayed rested over my chest and I could feel my pulse rate rise. This is the first time I've been teary eyed reading something, and not just based on emotions alone. This does carry a hopeful sadness. But, I was touched greatly by how beautifully it was written. You write with so much thought and passion.

Thanks all. This is a quite a bit more saccharine than my usual work, but the song that inspired it just brought out a side of me I didn't know existed. I must remember to suppress that side in the future.
